Though it goes against the grain, meaning hand on top of the wheel vs bottom. Doing such because it actually works, should be a no brainer.
However, setting up for the backing process is a totally different process. And though there is a basic way of setting up the trailer, the variable’s are so many, that one has to learn to adapt from the basic.

I was taught by an old hand some 30 years my senior, that anyone can drive a truck trailer forward. BUT unless you can back up saftly and proficently, the best driver isn’t ever gonna get paid.

Just as learning how to perform what is referred to as a "Button Hook" prior to making a corner, can keep a trailer from doing or getting damged. After doing it so long, it becomes second nature, and more often then not. One will continue, even when driveing their leaving the junk yard to go home in their auto, after an extended period of being out on the long hauls.

I first learned more than 50 year’s ago to put my hand on the bottom of the wheel when backing. And though I’ve learned to adapt it to the top, it wasn’t an overnight process.

Take all the time and space you need to back, safely. If not, all your work was in vain, cause the damage will cost more than your pay.

I teach people first with the wheel-barrow. To turn barrow right need to turn handles to the left. It’s all about the pivot point being the far wheel. Once people understand this point time for your good advice. Nice mate.
