How I Get Away With Loud Power Tools in my Apartment Workshop

How I Get Away With Loud Power Tools in my Apartment Workshop

In this video, I answer the most common question I receive on my videos: How I manage to have power tools and make noise inside my apartment workshop and not completely annoy the neighbors.

Kind of funny that these days, the newer the building, the crappier the construction

first time i used a planer, i had a mention from a neighbor across the street the next day. "Were you vacuuming last night?" That thing is so loud, just the basic delta planer, plus i was doing it at 2 in the morning lol.

Exactly the opposite of helpful. I’m a vampire, I work at night and play during the day. I can sleep when I’m dead, again. I need some ninja tech to cover my gear in so I can be drillin’, pounding and "measuring" in the bedroom… which is also part of my shop, because it’s a studio.

I’m just glad you didn’t say, “Easy…I killed them all!” Lol

Hmmm quite insightful but i need to learn how to sound insulate drywall houses. The notes that i take from this are:
    1. Make sure that there are atleast 2 walls to block the sound
    2. Close off all gaps inside the shop
    3. Record sound readings to see how the noise is distributed inside an apartment.
    4. Be mindful of the time so that you dont wake up anybody.

But i still need to know if adding carpets or sound acoustic panels or drapes help

lol i thought there is solution to make powertools less noisy, or maybe at least you make soundproof workshop…this just place your workshop at the far place. maybe your neighbor not hearing but what about the one below and upper you directly at your workshop room. They will hear you especially if you working at night…you should at least said to use belt system power tools with induction motor which make less noise…but of course it will add up to cost and space.

Sound is one thing. A wif/GF who is cute AF and lets the shop exist is more amazing

Hi there, how loud is your mitre saw? Can you do a test with the shop vac on and the mitre saw at the same time.

Surely you’ve got a solid door and I have it’s sealed? do use angle grinder?
Pretty awesome idea you’ve got there to have an apartment workshop I like it, good on your mate from Australia 👍

  15. KingJustice98 on September 13, 2022 at 6:44 pm

I’m sure you already know but there’s soundproof noise guards you can put on your walls to make it even less noisy.

That application is great, I also use it. I suppose it is quite accurate. That is amazing building with great soundproofing.

Loved the first cyclone build, thought how cool to lower the sound from the motor with a domed hood with sound deadening material then create a muffler for the output air down the back and vent into a water filter under the canister.

4:51 – " _Not_ a morning person" a.k.a "Normal person." Morning people force their personal problems onto the _entire_ world. We need more people like you to save the children from early morning abuse.

I live in a condo and my new neighbor just moved in and has been using power tools 24-7. Honestly it’s not a huge deal YET, but it’s starting to get on my nerves. If he used them occasionally that’s one thing but its ALL the time. His garage is directly on the other side of half of my dining room. Power tools are ok to use occasionally, but to have a workshop going non stop is NOT appropriate for community living period.

  23. Allan Los Angeles on September 13, 2022 at 6:50 pm

Justin, I used to have a 6,000 square foot shop with a 52 inch wide belt sander, horizontal panel saw, 10 hp ripsaw, two 5 hp shapers and big cyclone, and 8 or 9 cabinetmakers and installers. That was before you were born. Now I work in half my garage with a bench lathe, bench drill press, bench bandsaw, portable table saw. Luckily my neighbors haven’t complained. Yet.
What surprises me is nobody commented about the pretty blonde! Are we woodworkers more interested in dust collection than a good looking woman? Actually I was married to a former Miss Florida for 17 years. Some of the best years of my life.

First rule: No common walls and choose the bottom apartment, preferably with a cement floor.

  28. Colleen on September 13, 2022 at 6:57 pm

Yeah that’s what my neighbour said ‘he’s being respectful ‘
Uses power tools all time of the day and night doing his ‘Reno’s’. This has been going on for over 5yrs.

  29. pt on September 13, 2022 at 7:00 pm

Just ask your neighbours if they can hear you? I live in the UK and I live upstairs and I have a neighbour below me and a neighbour to the side. No matter which room I pick I will always disturb the neighbour below. I need a shed / garage….

U should use your shop skills to fortify your doors and windows for when your nieghbors come too kill you :p

  35. Brad Payn on September 13, 2022 at 7:08 pm

I wondered about that when I saw you were attaching electric motors to plywood. I had a similar problem once when I built a coffee shop potable cabin and plumbed it with an RV pump. The plywood acts as a sound board like a guitar does. It wasn’t loud enough to bother neighbors or anything, but it was loud enough that when the pump kicked on if you were on the phone, or taking an order through the window, it was still annoying. I’m sure those rubber feet on the bottom of your sander helped some, but there is still metal from the motor connected to a plywood box just like my pump in a bottom cabinet was. What I ended up doing was mounting my pump on two pads of neoprene cut to the size of the base, then putting thick rubber washers before metal washers under the plywood then the bolt heads, and the same kind of Rubber washers before metal washer before the nuts that held the base mounting plate of the pump. There was no parts of the pump or bolts securing the pump that touch wood, only Rubber or neoprene. The bolt holes through the wood were even a little over-sized. You could still hear the pump come on. I didn’t have a decibel meter, but I’d guess that I cut the pump noise by 80% – 90%. I had to tighten the nuts once in a while, a few times a year, and in about 4 years of daily use, the washers were squished flat and needed replaced, but the neoprene gaskets were still fine.

  44. Dinky Shop on September 13, 2022 at 7:20 pm

Good demo, but doesn’t address a situation if there were units directly above and below your unit (say w/ the same floor plan.) The noise and vibrations wd transfer to the floor and bounce and radiate thru the ceiling. Deadening comes from air gaps, discontinuous framing and absorbing material, not hard thick surfaces.

  45. Sir Nuggets on September 13, 2022 at 7:20 pm

Do you have neighbors above or below you though? How would the sound dampen traveling through the flooring or ceiling?

  46. One More Day on September 13, 2022 at 7:21 pm

3:11 the sound of table saw – as judged by the woodworkers’ phone: it is a loud MUSIC!!! yes!!!

  47. Fine Woodworking on September 13, 2022 at 7:21 pm

People are hypocritical. They party very loudly in the night, but complain when us woodworkers make a little noise with a saw.
