will LOWES swap $200 in broken CRAFTSMAN tools? Lifetime Warranty ACE Hardware
will LOWES swap $200 in broken CRAFTSMAN tools? Lifetime Warranty ACE Hardware
Will Lowes and Ace Hardware allow me to swap $200 in damaged tools?
We can pretty much thank SEARS for setting the Gold Standard in hand tool return warranty.

BE WARNED: HARBOR FREIGHT
-Pittsburgh Pro/Beaman/Doyle/Quinn etc: No receipt(sometimes). Exchange at Harbor Freight
HARBOR freight is notorious for not allowing warranties on some items without the original packaging stating Lifetime Warranty or Lifetime Warranty paper that came with the tool when new. These items are things like: torque wrenches, torque adapters, digital/mechanical calipers, hammers, number punches, and other Pittsburgh Pro items that originally came with Lifetime warranties. There seams to no issues with basic hand tools: wrenches, sockets, ratchets, pliers, or screwdrivers though sometimes they won’t allow 1 socket to be swapped without the entire kit being handed over. HOWEVER, they are slowly killing Pittsburgh Pro Brand and replacing them with Quinn. For now they will likely swap Pittsburgh for Quinn but in 10 years from now, with their track record, if you don’t have the original receipt/box they will likely decline you. They have faced lawsuits and lost for their deceptive practices. They also currently filter honest tool reviews to reflect a positive outcome as well. They do not hide that they do this and opening state they pick and choose which reviews to show. There are countless forums of people claiming their negative tool review was never posted. Do your own research before investing in their tools.
DIFFICULT: need to track down a truck to swap and or very picky.
-SNAP-ON: commenters say you can set up an online account and email them for a new tool now
-Matco: I would like your input other than in person truck swap
-Mac: I would like your input other than in person truck swap
-Cornwell: I would like your input other than in person truck swap
-SK tools: Email with pics and description. They are picky about “normal wear and abuse”.
-Makita hand tools: local service center
European Brands:
-Wera: Contact the place you purchased from and or you will need to ship the tool back at your expense. Normal Wear and Abuse voids the warranty.
-Knipex: DITO
EXTINCT BRANDS
-Bench top : Kmart should allow swap for Craftsman but this varies widely by store. Calling Craftsman may get you a replacement.
-New Britain: No receipt. House brand for NAPA auto in 70’s. Easy swap for current brand in store
-Plomb/Challenger: current owner is Proto: Call customer service and a new one will ship
-Crew Line/ Powerbuilt/ GM performance: Orielly Auto Parts will direct swap for current brand or call ALLTRADE TOOLS
-JH WILLIAMS: Snap-on owns but you need to track down a truck and maybe he’ll swap you.
-Herbrand: ?
-Thorenson: Bought out and not sure who currently owns them.
And many many more I can’t think of off the top of my head.
Craftsman tools: Lowes policy is technically to replace only item number for exact item number. So though I found friendly customer service reps you may not. ACE hardwares are all individually owned franchises so your mileage will vary widely on what they will allow to be returned. The few remaining Sears will still swap if they have them. You can always call Craftsman directly and they will likely mail you a replacement.

I brought in a 230 piece socket and ratchet set! No questions asked, found a suitable replacement, and walked out. Did I mention that the socket set I had came from a home liquidation for free, and were flooded at one point and every piece was ruined. That was a good day.
I still have a 150 pie e set from 1988 all 6 point sockets and I wish I had the case it came with. As far as the quality over American made and Taiwan. I don’t care. As long as their 6 point sockets I’m hood
on 9/4/2021 i went into Lowe’s to swap out my broking craftsman’s 1/2-in to 3/8-in Socket Adapter they Charged me taxes bc i didn’t have a receipt who keeps a receipt for 10 years +????
I’ve had some broken S-K tools for years. Nobody in my area carries them anymore.
Recently I contacted them directly (email) and they were happy to just send me new stuff for the broken stuff. I didn’t even have to ship them the old ones.
Since I left turning wrenches for a living I’ve warranted a few snap on things directly. They send a label by email and I get it back in a week or two no hassle and no tool truck guy!
Do you need a receipt at Lowe’s to get your craftsman ratchet warranty out
My Lowes has a terrible selection and my ACE tried comparing part number’s and said they can’t exchange them and to call craftsman.
I tought Craftsman did away with Lifetime warranty when they started closing stores.
Agreed! They all break! Warrantee swaps are pain but I’ve never had an issue with Harbor freight they even swapped out a couple things they probably shouldn’t have! Even power tools but I usually get the extended warranty on anything over $60!

I think ace hardware is a lot nicer and nicer people.
Super score!…..A new China Craftsman ratchet is better than an old USA Craftsman junk ratchet in my opinion. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I came to LOWES at my location they did not exchange ratchet for me .GUY say I bring cheap die cast ratchet they can not exchange for me …..You so lucky
When I did vinyl siding years ago sears was a godsend. Anytime you wanted a new tape you just snip it and bring it in. The cutters we used when they got dull bring them in no questions asked
Kinda sad and surprised that you just swapped/exchanged an American made (now collectible) tool for a over seas China made crap. lol
That upgrade to Gun Metal was awesome of Lowes to do. See if they can swap out your Craftsman Truck
No way you would get life time warranty in Europe, let alone for these prices. Nice.
just left the store brought in 2 3/8 ratches that are legit brand new and broken. They would not swap them out or even help me. Told me if I had my recept they would retuen them. Fuck lowes.
Hmmm I have about a collection of 30 ratchets that need to be warrantied 😭. Didn’t know it was this easy.
I know many comments here on getting brand new from Sears as replacements, but it’s always been their policy to replace them from refurbished if similar under the counter. If not then a new one off the rack. Nice to know about Lowes & Ace doing it too! Thanks for the video.
This certainly wasn’t my experience. Had 3 Lowe’s refuse to replace my broken socket without a receipt. Even though I purchased it at Sears 20 years ago. I’ve had the same experience with other Craftsman tools there also. Lifetime warranty should be just that. But it’s not with Craftsman anymore. I’m done with the brand as a whole and will spend more just to avoid buying Craftsman anymore. By contrast, HFT Is super easy warranty returns process. Just like the old days of Sears. Walk in swap it and walk out. No phone calls, or emails to corporate. No arguing with managers.
Have you had problems with returning SEARS era-Craftsman tools at Lowes?
When my craftsman wrenches broke I would buy replacement parts because I really didn’t want them to take my old wrenches and give me new ones since the old ones really are pretty good on occasion I used to go to Sears all the time to get my made in USA tools back since they had parts to fix them in the back
my Lowes won’t do that it has to be the exacted tool or no go
What if they don’t want to exchange it. Then are you just sol
THANK YOU….LOWE’S for Honouring
CRAFTSMAN..WARRANTY…
I had a proto ratchet that broke and it took over 6 months to get it replaced. The only local store that sold proto was Fastenal and they wouldn’t warranty it without a receipt so I had to deal directly with proto.
Thanks for the video!!! I like your dog also 🙂
I try do at Lowe’s they don’t Warranty old Craftsman tools.
I love my dewalt 192 piece set but this return policy is a deal maker for me. It’s effortless. I’m still waiting for dewalt to locate 2 racchetts for me. Immagine that they said they don’t have a half inch and 3 eights inch ratchet in my particular style in stick so they want me to call back in 2 weeks.
Lmao got yelled at by an employee at ace hardware yesterday went straight to the tools to swap out broken tools maybe about 100 dollars worth went to the register to swap them out and the lady got mad at me cause I didn’t have a receipt I told her the tools had a lifetime warranty lol she told me not without a receipt so I said who the hell would keep a receipt from ten years ago maybe a minute later she called her manager cause she thought she was right and was DUMB FOUNDED and so mad that I left the store with new tools without paying a cent but right before I walked out as the manager put my tools in a bag I said real loud BUT SIR YOU FORGOT MY RECEIPT SO IN CASE MY LIFETIME WARRANTIED TOOL BREAKS he laughed and said just bring it back and will swap for another one in front of the cashier
Update, Lowes will no longer take Craftsman tools sold by Sears. You have to go through Sears. If you are further than 30 miles from a Sears store they will ship, I have no idea how that all works. The two Sears close to me closed, but there is one about 45 minutes away.
I have a 25 year old craftsman set that I need to replace a few items. Worn out ratchets and sockets. I think I may try Lowe’s and Ace before the week is out.
I’ve had a hard time wearing out ratchets and screwdrivers. Years ago you could swap out a ratchet for a rebuilt one, but that took heavy use over years.
Wow I am really surprised at that it’s good to know
I am now watching this 10 months later,; is it still the same way? Need a couple ratchets to replace recently
Blue point is the toughest one to exchange I ever dealt with
Great video. I bet they were a bit squeamish being videotaped. I was watching but it goes to show the easy peasy way to swap out wrenches.
So was there actually something wrong with the ratchets or just old?
Hey man, I got a husky torque wrench and it states “Limited Lifetime Warranty” what way do I go about it and how long does do I have warranty for? Any idea?
No issues for me!….no receipt….no checking Serial numbers….. I just grabbed a New ratchet off the shelf and he made sure it "looked" similar……..and I think he entered a serial number into the computer real quick, but never "compared" them or anything…….but Granted this was only a 1/4" ratchet which costs $20.
I’ve used some snap on tools, & I can’t justify the price tag. I own a ton of husky, craftsman, & some autozone wrenches.
The only thing I can see as being worth it is the snap-on scan tools. The power tools get Milwaukee, & idk abt the air stuff.
(The thing w the air stuff is to just oil it up, & don’t run it dry.)
i just took a hand impact back and scanned my drivers license and no go. i was furious, unless i had the receipt FUCK LOWES!!!!!
You were SO better off keeping the 10 year old tools. The 2020 tools will be SHIT in a couple years.
Did the screwdrivers have to be broken or Flathead to be broken
Just took a half inch socket wrench bought decades ago at Sears to Lowes and found a close model. Leander, TX. They would not honor it. Gave me number to Craftsman. Called Craftsman, they transfered me automated to Sears. Sears automated message directed me to a website. Website directed me to email them a picture of the tool and the part number, etc. So the Lowes I went to only replaces tools bought at Lowes or ones that have the exact same number.
I work at a Lowes in the tool dept. and this is how it works. The people at the return desk know nothing about the tools so they will allways call for us. We find the same tool or one that is the closes to the one the customer has and give it to them. Some times we get some beautful old tool and give them the closes one to the one they havce no questinons ask.
Unfortunately the Ace and Lowes on Long Island NY are not this good about exchanging broken Craftsman tools. I had a 1/4" drive ratchet that skipped. Lowes in Farmingdale told me "no exchange take it to Sears." No more Sears around. ACE in Hewlett said I needed a receipt from their store and only within 30 days. And they were quite rude about it. I’ll bring it with me next time I travel out of state.
For snap on you can just email them and they will send you parts or the tool for free no shipping in less they ask you to send it in but they pay for shipping and it’s actually fast I got a new pliers in 4 days I imagine other tool trucks are similar but I know first hand that snap on does
Have you tried Wera, Stahlwille, or Hazet?
